It’s no secret that celebrities love their expensive toys, especially when it comes to high-powered and/or rare cars. We’ve put together a collection of five of the best celebrity car collections. From Jay Leno and his McLaren F1 to Ralph Lauren and his 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK, these celebrities don’t mess around when it comes to keeping their paint in prime condition on their rare cars.

david letterman car collection

David Letterman

The iconic late-night television host and producer David Letterman starts out our list at number 5. With his extensive collection of over 28 cars, Letterman’s collection is nothing short of awe inspiring. Not one to miss out on the prestige of owning a Ferrari, Letterman’s car collection boasts ten of these cars essential to any discerning car collector. His collection also includes 8 Porsches, 4 Austin Healeys, two Honda motorcycles, a Chevy pickup truck and one vehicle from each Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, MG, Volvo and Pontiac.

His collection was assessed in 2011 at approximately $1.2 million. Some of the top items in his collection? A 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS valued at $178,140, a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO valued at $157, 680, a 1963 Ferrari Lusso valued at $154, 380 and a 1974 Ferrari Daytona valued at $95,870. With a collection like this, it’s no wonder Letterman stores his cars and motorcycles at a secluded warehouse in Danbury, CT.

Tim Allen

Tim Allen

Known the world over for his acting and comedy, Tim Allen has built an impressive collection of cars all inspired by his childhood. Allen started collecting cars based on the toy models he had as a kid, accumulating their real-life counterparts in his large collection. He has a special affinity for muscle cars and has spent the last few years building his collection into what it is today.

Some notable items in his collection include a special edition Cadillac DeVille with 398 horsepower; a 1956 Ford F-100 pickup with a blown, injected 426 Hemi that puts out an astonishing 1,100 horsepower; and a custom 1996 Chevy Impala with a DOHC 32-valve Corvette ZR1 engine that can deliver 446 horsepower.

Nick Mason car collection

Nick Mason

Former Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason knows a thing or two about cars, but after having over 300 cars pass through your hands, that’s to be expected. Mason’s collection is definitely one to be envious of with his priceless assortment of Ferraris, Maseratis, Aston Martins, Bugattis and Porsches, he still doesn’t feel like it’s enough. He is constantly pining after the Austin Seven he owned as a teenager and even went so far as to hire a private investigator to track it down. Sadly, the hunt came up short, but that doesn’t dim the bright lights of his current collection at all.

The majority of his cars boast a racing pedigree and Mason has actually raced a lot of the cars himself. From his Ferrari 250 GTO, worth a cool $36 million, to his original Model T Ford, Mason’s collection is certainly nothing to scoff at. Every car in his collection is in total working order, but he no longer uses them as everyday drivers aiming to keep them in top condition for many years to come.

Ralph Lauren car collection

Ralph Lauren

Celebrated and iconic American fashion designer Ralph Lauren only spends about 30 hours a year in his car palace. While this sounds like a travesty of epic proportions to car-lovers everywhere, Lauren actually goes to the garage to look at all of his cars and talk about each individually with the curator he has tasked with the important job of looking after and maintaining his collection. Keep in mind that his 30 hours a year don’t account for his time spent driving the cars. What with a 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK “Comte Trossi,” a 1955 Jaguar XKD, a McLaren F1 LM, and a Ruf CTR3, he has a multitude of cars to choose from whenever he wants to go for a spin.

The 50 cars in Lauren’s collection have only ever been photographed together once, but it isn’t uncommon to see one of the $400 million collection driving around Montauk, Colorado or upstate New York. Driving is a family activity for the Laurens and how can you blame them with such a great collection at their disposal.

Jay Leno car collection

Jay Leno

Topping our list is a collection that is nothing short of astonishing. Jay Leno, famous late-night television host and comedian has a breathtaking collection of 130 cars, 93 motorcycles and a myriad of engine parts and memorabilia. His collection has been estimated at $50 million dollars.

Unlike many car collectors, Leno typically collects cars he simply likes to drive. From his $1.2 million McLaren 903-horsepower hybrid P1 that he just can’t stop driving to his 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado with 1,000 horsepower, turbocharged engine, Leno has a very obvious affinity for fast cars with flashy paint jobs. He loves to work on the cars himself and pays special attention to each and everyone. It’s not uncommon for him to get phone calls from elderly fans looking to send their rare cars to a good home and Leno is happy to provide one. For Leno, car collecting transcends the “let’s keep these nice and pristine in a museum” attitude because as long as their are fast cars to buy, Leno will keep accumulating them.
