Audi chairman Rupert Stadler made the announcement at its annual press conference, where it also said that the new Audi e-tron GT will form part of an e-tron portfolio that will span more than 20 models by 2025, at which point the brand hopes that its all-electric and plug-in hybrid models will account for one third of sales.

The e-tron GT will be the third all-electric vehicle in the e-tron range after the Audi e-tron SUV and the Audi e-tron sportback. Audi’s first fully electric series-produced model, the Audi e-tron, will be available in Germany starting at €80,000 (US$98,800). Audi will stage the world premiere of the all-electric vehicle this summer in Brussels, where it will be manufactured in company’s CO2-neutral plant. The Audi e-tron sportback will follow in 2019.

According to Audi, the four-door sports car will be ‘highly dynamic’, previewing the future direction of the company’s performance division. Brand chairman Rupert Stadler adding: “We interpret sportiness very progressively with our fully electric e-tron GT, and this is how we will take our high-performance brand Audi Sport into the future.”

“I have brought you a design sketch of an electrifying “must-have.” It’s a car that thrills at first glance, a fully electric gran turismo that stands for a new kind of sportiness: the Audi e-tron GT. This highly emotive spearhead from Audi Sport is to be produced at our Böllinger Höfe plant near Neckarsulm as of 2020. It proves that electric drive can also deliver high performance. I am sure: This very sporty four-door will certainly have many fans and customers. We will lead our high-performance brand Audi Sport into the electric future with models like this,” Stadler said.

Stadler revealed that the car will be based on the same ‘J1’ platform as Porsche’s Mission E, collaboration on the development of which has “reduced development costs by a three-digit million Euro amount”.
