Toyota Etios – A spacious sedan
The Toyota Kirloskar Motors limited is the Indian arm of the Japanese auto giant the Toyota Motors. Many world class vehicles have been brought to the Indian shores by the TKML, the MPVs the Quallis and the Innova being the most popular among them. The TKML has entered the small car segments by launching the sedan Toyota Etios in 2010 which has earlier been showcased during the 2010 Indian auto expo. A refreshed model of the Etios has been launched on 14th October 2014.
The Toyota Etios comes in 4 petrol and 4 diesel variants, all having manual transmissions. The price tag of the Etios is Rupees 6.03 to 8.46 lakh. The Etios JPS and the JD are the base variants and the VX and VXD are the top variants.
The Toyota Etios colours are classic grey, white, symphony silver, harmony beige, celestial black and vermilion red. The stylish body has an upper grille gleaming with excess chrome, lower black grille, body coloured bumpers ORVMs and door handles and 12 spoke alloy wheels. The other exterior features include sharp head lamps, intermittent wipers, white fog lamps at the front, a blacked-out B pillar, triangular tail lamps, chrome garnish on the boot and side protection mouldings with chrome inserts.
The dual tone cabin of the Toyota Etios has a premium look with silver accents on the steering wheel and gear knobs. The standard features include 2 air bags, an engine immobiliser, child lock facilities, a manual AC, tilt adjustable power steering, fabric seats and internally operated ORVMs. The top variants have ABS, EBD, a central locking facility, power windows, electric body coloured ORVMs with blinkers, rear parking sensors, leather wrapped steering wheel a foldable antenna on top and a 2 Din music system with Bluetooth connectivity for telephony.
The Etios is powered by 1496 cc, 88 bhp and 132 NM torque petrol engines giving mileages of 16.78 kmpl. The diesel variants have 1364 cc, 67 bhp and 170 NM torque engines with mileages of 23.59 kmpl. The car takes 11.5 sec for 0 to 100 kmph acceleration.
The physical dimensions of the Etios include 4265 mm length, 2550 mm wheel base and 174 mm ground clearance with a big boot of 495 litres. The suspensions are McPherson struts at the front and torsion beams at the rear. The tyres are 185/60 R15 type. The brakes are disc type at the front and drum type at the rear.
A stylish body, performing engines with good mileages, spacious cabins and low maintenance costs are the plus points of the Etios. The competition comes from the likes of the Hyundai Elite i20, the Maruti Swift Dzire and the Mahindra Verito Vibe.
