Bright headlights can enhance the look of any vehicle more than the best car wax. There are three major options for replacing or customizing headlight bulbs. Most vehicles come with halogen lighting, but xenon and LED lights are becoming more common.

Drivers should be aware of the differences between these types of lighting to make the right choices when it comes to visibility. Whether you need to replace burnt out bulbs, address electrical malfunctions indicated by a car code reader or you just want brighter headlights that last longer, here are a few differences between light bulbs that contain halogen or xenon gases.


Incandescent bulbs filled with gases such as bromine or iodine are halogen bulbs. The gas within these bulbs reacts to the heat of the filament, giving off a white light. The color temperature of halogen lighting ranges from about 3000K to 5000K, with the upper end of this range being comparable to some Xenon HID lights.

Halogen bulbs are relatively easy to install. Handle bulbs carefully to avoid leaving fingerprints that can become hot spots and quickly cause the bulb to fail. Halogen bulbs don’t last as long as xenon or LED lighting. If the electrical problems in your vehicle are more widespread, you may also want to keep a car jump starter on hand.


Xenon High Intensity Discharge lighting differs from halogen lights in several ways. These bulbs are filled with xenon rather than halogen gas. Xenon HID bulbs also do not contain a filament. Instead, two electrodes produce a spark. You may want to consider upgrading to xenon bulbs so that the headlights on your vehicle are brighter and have stronger beams.

This type of light has a brighter color temperature than halogen, on a level comparable to LED lighting. The temperature may vary over time, but xenon bulbs last five or six times longer than halogen.Whereas a light with a halogen bulb could burn anywhere from 450 hours up to 1,000 hours before requiring a replacement, xenon bulbs burn for as long as 5,000 hours.

There are three downsides to xenon lighting. The delicate bulbs require high voltage to produce a spark and also draw more power than efficient alternatives. A trained automotive electrician should complete the modifications necessary to install xenon bulbs.

How to Choose Headlights

The right headlights for a vehicle depend on your driving preferences, electrical skills and budget. Halogen headlights produce strong beams and are affordable and easy to replace. For brighter and longer-lasting beams, you should considerXenon HID lights. LED lighting is even more durable and efficient than xenon, with a lifespan upwards of 40,000 hours.
